Remodeling the Kitchen: What to Consider

Think about the last time you had a party. You cleaned the whole house, spread out snacks, lit candles, and made your whole home as inviting as possible. But where did the whole group end up standing? That’s right, the kitchen!

The kitchen is far more than merely a work space. It has many roles to fill, and you need to anticipate each of those roles when deciding to remodel. Here are some things to think about when planning your renovation:

The Appliance Triangle-Make a drawing of the proposed renovation. Then draw a triangle connecting your stove, sink, and refrigerator. The smaller the total of all three legs of this triangle, the more effective your kitchen will be. Keep in mind, if you have an island in between any of these appliances, you will have to curve your lines around it in order to simulate the real walking path.

Island or Perimeter Cabinets-An island cabinet can significantly increase the quantity of storage and counter space you will have inside your kitchen. Additionally, it provides extra seating for on-lookers that are congregating in your kitchen. The downside with the island is that it’s a barrier to motion inside your kitchen. If you are currently restricted on space, the placement of island cabinets can make the kitchen feel and look smaller, and can make an otherwise economical layout, very cumbersome by needing to walk around the island constantly. This could be reduced by making the island movable, but that would also reduce its functionality since water and electric lines could not be installed in it.

Countertops-A countertop can be the finishing touch of any cabinet project. Choosing a counter that enhances your general kitchen is important. It should match not just the colors in the kitchen, but also the other equipment that you have chosen. For instance, a stainless steel counter top might not be the very best selection for a historic, colonial kitchen.

Wall Cabinets- Kitchen cabinets will be the most expensive, and most important choice you will make when planning you renovation. The style, finish, and kind of wood will combine to define your kitchen’s style.

It can be a bit overwhelming to tackle all of these issues on your own. Make sure you locate assistance wherever you can. Classes at cabinet wholesalers or hardware stores are a good place to start. In addition, it is always wise to have an expert you can turn to. Find an experienced cabinet maker you can turn to for questions and assistance.

Enhancing The Appearance Of An Old Kitchen Stove

Moving into a new home often does not mean you are going to be greeted by a collection of shiny new kitchen appliances. In particular, you will probably find the stove has had a number of years of use as they are not replaced that often. Also, after moving house, the last thing most people want to do is shell out on new appliances. Even though it is nice to have a modern looking stove, you can still make changes to your current one to make it look more up to date.

You will probably find that the color of the current stove does not match the color scheme that you have planned for your kitchen. Also you may find it is marked, scuffed or even shows signs of a lot of wear and tear. All is not lost, however, as most hardware stores will sell spray paint that will adhere to a metal appliance. Although there will not be an abundance of color options, sticking to a neutral color is a good idea.

It is important not to paint the stove in the kitchen otherwise you will end up with paint everywhere. Also, for safety, it should be done in a well ventilated area, preferably outside.

On your stove top will often find there are wore coils covering the gas-burning or electric surface. Putting a teakettle on top of these wire coils can add quite a distinctive look. They come in a variety of colors and shapes which can complement the color scheme you have in your kitchen. It is possible to add quite a contemporary look with the addition of a stylish teakettle to your stove.

In most cases, the stove is placed against a kitchen wall with a small range hood fixed above it. The area at the back of the stove can be decorated. Ideas include, colored splash backs, decorative tiles or even a nice piece of art. Also, there is a small ledge at the back of the stove on which you can place a few terracotta pots. You should, however, take care that any items are heat or fire proof.

An old kitchen stove can easily be painted and accessorized and made to look like a newer appliance. If buying a new stove is beyond your budget at the moment, then updating your existing model is the best choice.
