Selecting your countertop is vital to completing your kitchen renovation project. Pick the right one and you will have years of enjoyment in your kitchen, pick the wrong one and you will regret ever starting this project.
There are several options to consider when picking your countertop. First, you have to decide on the type of counter top. Among the many options are concrete, granite, linoleum, wood, tile, and many more. You can also combine materials to fit your look and your budget. For instance, you can have a wood base with granite slices adhered to it.
Although rather new on the scene, concrete provides a wide range of options. The concrete can be poured to take on virtually any shape, can be dyed to any shade, and can be stamped to simulate any texture. The downsides are that it can be quite heavy, and if it cracks, it is very difficult to repair it to look acceptable again.
Granite is gaining in popularity and is becoming the go to material for a high-end kitchen. Granite can be found in literally thousands of shades and mottling. It is easy to clean, and maintain. It is very durable and it can last for years without showing any signs of aging. On the other hand, it will be nearly impossible to find replacement pieces that will match your original pieces exactly. Another quality to consider is that since it is so hard, it can be unforgiving when putting down fragile glass with any force.
Wood counter tops, or butcher-block counter tops are a historic choice. These tops can last a long time and can be simply restored to their original look by merely sanding them and resealing them.
This is just a few with the numerous choices for you to think about. Make sure you’ve teamed up with reputable cabinet maker that can take you to a wholesale warehouse where you are able to personally see and feel many of the different types of countertops.

Various Options for a Kitchen Countertop
The kitchen countertop is one of the more significant features of a kitchen. Most cooking or food preparation activities are done on countertops. It should be resilient enough to withstand scratches, spills and stains and even the weight of food processors, coffeemakers and many other kitchen equipment. Kitchen countertops are as visible as the cabinetry as both usually occupy the same amount of space. Countertops should likewise complement the overall design and style of the kitchen. There are a variety of materials available for kitchen countertops.
1. Granite - This natural stone is one of the most elegant and most popular kitchen design. Though it is comparatively more expensive than other materials, it is one of the most durable because of its innate hardness. Granite is vulnerable to moisture and requires periodic sealing, but it does have a holds up well to heat and pressure. The disadvantage of granite is the limitation on color choices. It is organic and options are limited to what natural supply is available. Colors and patterns may also be inconsistent which makes it advisable to check the actual stock available in a supplier’s warehouse as it may vary significantly from that of the samples.
2. Quartz - Quartz looks almost similar to granite, except that it comes either as a natural stone or engineered. Engineered quartz is considered more versatile because of the color options. It is just as hard as granite, but with the added advantage of being non-porous which makes it more resistant to moisture, stains, and bacteria. Unlike granite, there is no need to apply any sealant to quartz countertops.
3. Solid Surface - Living up to its name, solid surfaces are hard and sturdy. Though they are not scratch and stain-resistant, sanding can basically take care of any minor defacement. Designs and colors are likewise quite extensive. However, it cannot stand up to heat which make trivets a necessity in a kitchen with this type of counters.
4. Laminate - Like its flooring counterpart, laminate is an inexpensive countertop option. It is composed of a plastic, paper or melamine backing layer, the core or fiberboard which stiffens and strengthens it and finally, a third layer which is a photographic image of any natural material possible from hardwood to natural stone. This material is unfortunately vulnerable to water stains, chipping, scratches and burns and must be replaced when damaged.
5. Ceramic Tile - Apart from hand-painted or terra cotta tiles, ceramic tiles are the most affordable and easiest to maintain of all countertop options. Another advantage of choosing ceramic tiles is the variety of designs that these come in. Mosaics can even be created allowing a kitchen to look truly unique. One of the disadvantages of ceramic tile is that it is prone to chipping. Stains may also collect on the grouting between each tile if left unsealed.
6. Concrete - Concrete is one option that can work well with an unusually-shaped kitchen concept. This is a versatile material because any color can be applied to it as well as any decorative ornament like colored stones or shells. Concrete surfaces, however, can fracture and will require regular sealing for proper maintenance.
7. Stainless Steel - Using stainless steel countertops give a sleek, modern look to your kitchen. These are very durable, resistant to heat, and easy to clean. Stainless steel surfaces are unfortunately likely to dent and scratch.
It can be confusing to decide the right one for your kitchen with all these options. All these options can make it difficult to make a choice. To make it easier, set your priorities and evaluate which one would work well to the needs of your home, fit in your budget, and durable enough for the way it will be used.

Got Kids? You Need Counter Height Bar Stools that are Durable
We moved into our home 5 years ago and the first thing on my to do list was to purchase bar stools. You see we now had a wonderful, large open kitchen to work with. The counter is L shaped and quite spacious. Counter height bar stools would be the perfect addition.
With 3 kids ages 3, 5, and 8, mealtimes were always a lot of work and sometimes stressful. There was so many little chores to do like setting the table and cleaning it after meals. Taking the dishes to the counter and loading the dishwasher. Cleaning the counters and getting all the crumbs and particles from the chairs and the floor took a little time too.
I thought it would be so much easier if the kids could eat right at the kitchen counter sometimes. So I started looking for some cheap counter stools. I found that they were not so cheap, especially online and at the local department stores. We had just gotten into our new home, so the budget was tight.
I was looking for at least three stools and I was not prepared to spend $75 or more per stool. I discovered many styles of stools made of metal or wood. There were several choices in design too. Did I want backs on my stools or footrests at the bottom for support? The list goes on. I was tempted by the 30″ swivel bar stools, but decided that would probably end up in disaster.
The height was a big factor. If you are looking for a stool you have to be sure it is the right height for where you are planning to use it. Too tall and it will be awkward to try and sit and eat. Too short and you won’t be able to reach the counter. It is important to take measurements with you when you go shopping so that you can be sure the stool will work.
I was out on a shopping trip at Walmart when I saw the perfect stools for my kitchen. I just happened to look down the furniture aisle and there they were. I never thought Walmart would have something I liked and for such a great price too. They were only $25 each which meant I was only spending $75 for my entire bar stool purchase. This was fantastic. I didn’t thing Walmart would offer good quality, but I was wrong. These were wooden saddle seat stools with a cherry finish. They were very nice looking and were comfortable too.
I took the stools home after purchasing them and found that I had definitely made the right choice. The fit perfectly with the rest of the kitchen decor and the dining room. They did not swivel so they would be safe seating for the children. The height turned out to be exactly what we needed to be comfortable at the counter.
When we had guests over, they all made nice comments about the stools. They wanted to know where I got them and when I told them, they couldn’t believe it. They were all excited about the price too. Many of them went to Walmart searching for those stools. They wanted a good bargain too.
I think I hit the jackpot that day. The kids can eat comfortably at the counter and the sink and dishwasher are right there for easy clean up. It makes mealtimes less stressful and more enjoyable. Everything is faster and easier and not such a mess. This has been our favorite purchase since we moved in.

The Secret to Getting Great Kitchen Counters
There are more options than ever in kitchen surfaces, each with pros and cons. The biggest trend right now is stone, stone, and more stone. There are almost limitless choices in stone, all of them extremely durable. They’ll take a lot of abuse, but the cons are that they’re expensive, cold, and tough on glassware — if you drop a glass on a stone counter, your counter will be fine but the glass will break. Here’s a rundown on a few options:
ENGINEERED STONE combines the durability of granite with the colorful palette of solid surfacing. This is a good choice for homeowners who want the natural look of stone without its maintenance; it provides lots of color options and a wide cost range. Its distinct look might not be for everyone, but it’s structurally and aesthetically predictable, stain- and scratch-resistant, unfazed by heat, and unaffected by everyday acids like coffee, citrus, and vinegar.
Cost: Can range anywhere from $60 to $120 square foot installed.
NATURAL STONE, including top-of-the-line granite as well as marble, limestone, and slate, makes a wonderful style statement. It’s available in a broad range of colors, grains, finishes, and textures, which means it can work with any design scheme. Granite is heat- and stain-resistant; marble and limestone are likely to show stains and scratches. Marble is usually a better choice in an area where it will get less wear and tear. Joints will show on all natural stone counters.
Cost: Prices vary regionally, but expect to pay at least $60 to $120 per square foot depending on the type of stone, the detailing, and the complexity of the installation.
CONCRETE is a trend in kitchen surfaces; you can dye it whatever color you want or have it embedded with stones, jewels, and fossils, but be prepared, it stains and cracks.
Cost: Prices vary significantly, depending on grade and quality, complexity of the installation, detail, and finish. Expect to pay anywhere from $60 to $350 per square foot.
