How to Remodel Your Kitchen with a Budget

So your kitchen has been that way for the past five years? Well, it’s definitely time to remodel it. Now don’t you run off thinking it’s some walk in the park or something, because it is certainly not. Remodeling your kitchen is a full time job that is going to take you a couple of weeks in the least, so you want to begin by proper planning, otherwise you won’t like the result. Didn’t they say “proper prior planning prevents poor performance”?

I kind of like one of those words of wisdom from the Good Book; something about setting your hands on the plough and looking back. It kind of applies to remodeling a kitchen. It is work more than what you had to go through the first time, putting the place together. Now it’s double because you are taking some things out and bringing others in. You’d better be prepared.

If you have the right kind of companion, remodeling your kitchen might not be as much work as you fear it should. Make no mistakes, it is going to do a lot to you physically and emotionally, but with a partner to share all of that stress with, you are on the right track. I would look forward to the end of it all, and then give it all that I’ve got. You could too.

If you have a couple of kids who are a bit grown up, and one or two live-in helps, they can help you in remodeling your kitchen better than you could have by yourself. However, in this sense I speak only of the physical stress involved in the process. Financially, the whole thing is another deal entirely. I’d advice that if you have an epileptic bank account, you might want to wait until it was more stable before you plan on remodeling your kitchen.

Men mostly like to leave the kitchen to the women, but a man who really cares about the whole house does not even think along those lines. Every room belongs to everyone, and both of you have a job to do. Do not let him leave you saddled with this; you both have to take responsibility for the whole process.

There is one sure way to make yourself unhappy when dealing with remodeling your kitchen, and that is in focusing all of your energy on the wrong things. I know of folks who would go on and on about how much it is going to cost them, and all the stress of it. The problem with this is that it saps out the pleasure in all the activity, and makes a mess of it long before it is over.

If you are going to get real creative, then I’d say you should plan more like you are building a whole home rather than just remodeling your kitchen. There is so much to it that you just don’t have a clue. Wait until you have brought in the architect and the interior decorator, and then you will realize what you are letting yourself in for. I have known kitchen remodel jobs that lasted somewhere between six to eight months. No exaggeration there.

Now I don’t know what you are thinking that kitchen remodeling is all about, but before you go all swooning and counting off the changes you want on the fingers of ten hands, I’d say you snap into reality first. Think your way through a couple of these phrases. Lots of work, lots of time needed to plan and execute, lots of moving around. All that wasn’t meant to scare you, just to bring you to the reality of it. Now I’m certain that since you have your head and heart in the right place, things aren’t likely to go wrong anymore.

You need to process the orders you are making for your kitchen remodeling. Thankfully, the internet has made that relatively easy, but there are human errors that computers cannot account for. If you want all of your deliveries to be on time, you might have to put some special effort into it. A few calls here and there might set you on track.

Once you have done all you need to do in remodeling your kitchen to exactly the way you want it to be, consider purchasing a Countertop Toaster Oven or Large Toaster Ovens. They look great and are very convenient kitchen gears.

Cabinet Re-Facing - Offering A Quick Pick-Me-Up For Your Kitchen

Probably the number one room where the remodeling can add tremendous value to your property is the kitchen and it’s also one of the most popular rooms in the home. With house flippers, a large portion of their budget will be focused on the kitchen because it is the biggest draw for house shoppers. What if your kitchen is in need of a face lift but you don’t have the major budget of a seasoned house flipper? A strong first impression is what you will get if you simply re-face your kitchen cabinets.

This will require a redo of both the hardware and the front faces of the cabinets. The doors, drawer fronts, cabinet handles, and the cabinet body fronts are all included in this.

One of the most common methods is to repaint all cabinet surfaces and doors and it’s probably the cheapest as well. Usually, you can accomplish the entire job in 2 or 3 days which means that this process doesn’t have to be time consuming. It is advised that you do all the door and drawer painting outside or in a well ventilated are of your home because it does make a bit of a mess. For the cabinet body fronts you’ll paint them where they stand so put up plastic sheeting over the doorways to prevent excess paint and fumes from leaking into other rooms of your house.

The other most popular method is to simply replace all the doors, drawers and hardware while leaving the cabinet bodies in place and either painting or refinishing those. This method allows you the fun and freedom of shopping for new cabinet doors but also saving hundreds or thousands of dollars over the price of entirely new cabinets.

You will also be allowed a lot of creative freedom from cabinet re-facing. Individuals who are crafty would often cut out the middle section of cabinet doors and it they will be replaced with punched copper, dried food materials in colorful arrangements, shiny objects between panes of glass, and other materials. Providing a more open space visually is simply using glass insets but you need to be sure that you are on the neat side as visitors will see the entire contents of your cabinets.

Before starting your cabinet refacing project check out various kitchen remodeling photos on the internet and in your local home improvement stores. There are a lot of great ideas that will suit any budget. Most of all, have fun and enjoy the pick-me-up!

The Many Faces of a Countertop

By definition, a countertop is a horizontal work-surface in food preparation areas, bathrooms and workrooms in general. The diversity of materials a counter can be made from is vast as both natural and manmade products are used. When you know your budget, your practical needs and the look you want for the space, you will be ready to work with your contractor in finding the right material. Let us take a quick look at some of the options.

Quartz

Quartz is the most recent material to come into use for counters. It is easily the most durable countertop stone available, as well as being virtually scratch proof. And since it does not need to be continuously resealed, quartz is almost maintenance free. The pieces are manufactured from about 95% quartz and 5% polymers. The addition of a polymer to the process not only holds the quartz together, it also allows for the introduction of color. The potential for vibrant color is available, as well as a more crystalline look. For many homeowners, this is a huge selling point. Open floor plans are commonplace in new homes today, and therefore it is important to coordinate the color palettes for several rooms. The color selection in quartz makes that coordination much easier.

Marble

Marble has been a popular material for counters for many years as it evokes a feeling of sophisticated extravagance reminiscent of Italian opulence. The rich tones range from creamy whites to soft oranges, ethereal greens and vibrant blacks. Some forms of marble are highlighted with bright veining, adding further drama to the room. Since marble is by definition a crystallized limestone, it is very soft. It etches easily and is susceptible to staining from acidic liquids such as lemon juice and vinegar. Marble requires resealing annually in order to retain a protective coating against damage.

Concrete

Concrete is quite a versatile material to use in a countertop application. Stains, pigments and epoxy coatings can be used to simulate a wide range of colors. Shells, glass, tiles, or coins can be mounted in the concrete before the sealing process creating a highly personalized space. If your kitchen or bathroom is of an unusual shape and may require non-traditional countertop formations, concrete may be the way to go. As is it is a soft application, it can be molded into any shape. Even oddly shaped sinks and drain boards can be specially fitted with ease. The maintenance is almost nil and don’t forget concrete resists heat as well.

Laminate

Laminate is probably the most popular option for counters in work spaces. It is available in a wide range of colors and patterns, is easy to install and the cost is lower than other materials. Durability has improved, making it much more resilient to wear and damage than in the early years. Of course it will never compare to stone, but proper care will make it last much longer.

Solid Surface

Solid surface counters are made from blending acrylic polymers and stone-derived materials. They are heat resistant, non-porous, hygienic and food safe. The manufacture process provides the opportunity for a range of design options that can mimic granite, marble or onyx.

Wood

Wood is perhaps the oldest material used in a countertop application, dating back to the middle ages. Butcher blocks are still used in many homes and European hardwoods are a growing trend. Wood is definitely the most eco-friendly of all the choices, but some believe it is perhaps not a food safe choice. Aside from having to thoroughly clean the surface after preparing food, one must oil the surface regularly to maintain its luster. However unlike other countertop materials, dents and marks are easily repaired with some sanding and mineral oil. The use of wooden surfaces is not allowed in commercial food preparation areas, as it is believed that bacteria is absorbed into the wood and therefore will infect food that is placed there next. This theory has been disproved by a study done by the University of Wisconsin. Their research found that bacterial absorbed in wood actually withers away and dies before it can do any harm.

Stainless Steel

This is the most durable, most hygienic and most cost effective material for countertops on the market. It is widely used in commercial applications because it is so easily cleaned and can withstand a lot of abuse. The downside with stainless steel is that it can look worn. Scratches and dents will occur, but if used in a commercial environment, aesthetics are not necessarily a concern. In a residential setting, stainless steel may not be the best choice.

There are many choices available in countertop materials, but it is important to go into the search with a clear idea of your needs, your budget and the look you want. Your contractor can help you with these decisions, make sure to ask for all the options available.

Why You Should Consider Great Granite Counter Tops

Every singe one of us, not matter where we live, wants the most beautiful home possible. And in our dream home there would be things like a spa bathroom with real marble flooring and jetted tubs. In the kitchen there would be expensive custom kitchen cabinets, crafted from the finest wood and inlaid with gold leaf and of course the counter tops would be made of granite.

If you don’t have the budget to have it all, you should at least get your new granite countertops. Why? There are several very good reasons:

Home Value - Ask any real estate agent anywhere in the country - granite countertops will add to the resale value of your home, as well as help sell it faster. Along with hardwood floors and real fireplaces granite counter tops swing more buyers when making a decision between homes for sale than many other, more obvious factors. Even if you have absolutely no intention of moving anywhere in the foreseeable future because they are so durable with just a little TLC your granite countertops will look as good in decade as they did the day they were installed.

Eco Friendliness - The world is going green crazy and granite countertops are actually a very eco - conscious choice. It is natural stone, quarrying methods have been improved by leaps and bounds and granite does not give off all those icky VOCs that some artificial kitchen counter top materials do.

The Durabilty Factor - Not that this is a behavior I advocate but you could, if you wanted to, give your granite countertops a literal beating and they would emerge unscathed. Granite resists cracking, chipping and staining and if someone accidentally places a hot saucepan on a granite counter top it is no cause for concern. The fact that granite countertops are super easy to clean is a big bonus as well.

In fact, all that is needed to maintain granite countertops on a daily basis is a few drops of dish washing liquids in some lukewarm water. And if you take the extra step of getting them resealed once every two or three years they will remain almost perfect indefinitely.

Pure Visual Appeal - Let’s face it, granite countertops look like nothing else. They practically scream luxury to anyone who walks in the room and the number of different color and textures is almost literally never-ending. Yes, they are more expensive than many other kitchen or bathroom counter top options but they are worth every penny, both today and years and years down the line

Baby Proof Your Home To Keep Your Baby Safe

Baby proofing a home is a very important aspect that should be considered in home improvements and in building a home. You don’t realize how important it is until you have a baby at home. For newly weds and expectant parents, baby proofing is one of the most important things that must not be ignored in the preparation for the baby’s arrival.

There are many things and areas at home that we think are safe. But with a curious baby, anything at home can be a potential danger especially when he learns to crawl or walk. You can’t watch your baby the whole time, and even if you do, babies are very unpredictable. You’ll never know what they’ll try to reach next and they love to wander around. With their young minds, they don’t know yet what things are safe and not.

Safety is one of the things that must be prioritized in home arrangements and improvements. Visit all the rooms at home, from the living room, kitchen, bedroom and even the garage. Try to anticipate everything that can be harmful to the baby and think of ways on how you can rectify them.

All the sharp edges and hard corners at home must be padded to prevent the child from hitting against them. To prevent the child from heading to other rooms, use baby proof latches and locks on the doors. Never use rubber stoppers on doors because they can be a choking hazard.

Place the crib away from the windows in the nursery area and for more safety, place a rug around it. Make sure no small objects, medicines, poisonous chemicals are left in the room which are within reach of a child. Keep them in a locked cabinet or in areas that can’t be reached. The heavy objects and furniture must not topple because the baby might pull it or climb on it. Make sure to unplug the appliances and cover the sockets with baby proofing covers to prevent electrical shock.

You cannot watch or chase your baby the whole time but you can confine him to a safe area at home where he can safely play and roam around with the use of safety gates. It’s a great way to deny the child’s access to the other areas at home such as the kitchen and staircase. For the staircase, make sure to install gates on the top and on the bottom.

Babies and children tend to be accident prone. It is essential that the parents must be keen in spotting everything that can be a potential danger to the baby and in taking immediate action to prevent the accidents from happening.

The beauty along with warmth of marble makes it the perfect countertop material with regards to aesthetic and functional purposes in just about any kitchen. In addition to their natural strength, marble is a very lovely stone that adds coloring and warmth into a room. Although marble countertops are quite common, a house owner might not exactly want to commit the premium price tag for granite, as well he or she may reside in a region subject to constraints on resale valuations. In circumstances like this, cheap granite countertops are generally an attractive selection.

Granite is relatively pricey, with prices commencing at $58 a square foot. A lot of the price is not necessarily in the natural stone itself, but in the particular quarrying, transportation, shaping and installation. Generally homeowners will supply labor on advancements to reduce charges, but installing corian countertops should be still left to the specialists. However, a large market place with numerous vendors and substantial special discounts creates a price selection that allows anyone to have granite counters in their residence.

Granite suppliers can typically have three to four groupings of corian to select from. The particular suppliers will reference their groupings or perhaps ranks by numbers. The initial tier will include the particular premium items that cost the greatest value.

A stone will be grouped based on many criteria, including region of origin, shade, veins or styles, thickness of the slab, amount of smooth minerals in the natural stone, and fashion trends. Corian from lower divisions has the identical beauty and energy as the slabs in the higher groupings. Additionally, rocks in a low tier could be more dense than some rocks in a top tier, so it pays off to get out and compare around.

While corian from the reduced tiers exhibits the particular hardness granite is recognized for, the existence of more supple minerals may require further cabinet supports or even a penetrating sealant.

Slimmer cut stone can be a little less than 2 centimeters instead of a suggested three; if so, the actual installer can provide extra stability by laminating it to plyboard backing.

Kitchen Design And Remodeling Tips

We all like to spend time in the kitchen since this is the major hub of every home. When there is the time to remodel and renovate the kitchen, there are several things that one needs to do to get best results. Every kitchen should be a wide open space as this makes it look much bigger and more welcoming. Also there are several things that are no longer needed and should be discarded from the cooking area to clear up some extra space.

Have a look around you kitchen and see what are all those kitchen tools and gadgets that you don’t care for any longer. Make a list with all of them. Also write a separate list with items that are still useful in your kitchen. This will allow you to effectively see what utensils or appliances need to be replaced with some more modern versions that are more energy efficient and work better and faster.

Making the kitchen an open space is much better in today’s world. For example if you have a separate room next to the kitchen, one that you don’t really care for right now, you can easily break down the walls and have both rooms turned into one big kitchen. This will give you extra space for your cooking endeavors during the day. Also an open kitchen allows for free flow of creativity when it comes to using kitchen appliances and furniture in a modern and elegant way.

Check your countertops that are not cluttered and if they are, you should declutter them as soon as possible. Replace your old small tools and appliances with more modern ones and put them under the cabinets. This will in fact eliminate the need to keep them on your countertop and free that space to give you a more elegant and welcoming air to your cooking space.

You can easily see that the modern kitchen of today are larger, with an open space that has great illumination. So don’t forget to ensure that you have adequate lighting in your cooking space. This will allow you to see well in the kitchen when preparing meals, as well as entertaining guests during the evening.

Small Kitchen Redesigning Tips

When it comes to remodeling a small kitchen, it needs a few different ways to go about it as opposed to when redesigning a large kitchen. There are a few questions that you need to answer beforehand so you really make the best use of your available space in the cooking area.

For example you need to be clear about your available budget and you also need to take into account the actual space you have to work with. Clearly a small place needs less money to renovate than a large one, however you might consider adding some expensive and modern appliances or furniture that will cost you more money than you’ve first anticipated.

First things first, check the space available in your cooking area and see if you actually have enough place for everything including furniture and kitchen appliances. You want to avoid ending up with a place that is overcrowded due to lack of walking space. The most commonly used appliances, including the fridge, sink and oven should be close to each other for easy reach. If you have a breakfast table in the room, see if you can easily fit an undercounter cabinet underneath it for gaining extra space in there.

There are two aspects of each kitchen: functionality and design. If your cooking space fulfills the functionality aspect, it is time to look into the decor of the room. A small kitchen needs a lighter color palette to seem larger, while a huge room with big bare walls can better use those walls for adding various hangers and cooking utensil holders for holding various tools and gadgets that can save your space on the countertop or other working surfaces.

Plan carefully from start to finish and your small kitchen remodeling can lead you to success and achievement of a beautiful, functional kitchen.

Adding a few well placed drop ceiling lights in your kitchen will greatly enhance the appeal of the cooking space. Visit ceiling lights to get more info.
