Why White Kitchen Cabinets Are Always A Good Choice
White Kitchen Cabinets establish the design of the entire kitchen. They can go in any kitchen. The way you accessorize and choose details make them a perfect fit. Many people choose white cabinetry for the kitchen because they equate it with cleanliness, but also because it makes a room look larger.
In terms of price, white cabinets are more expensive than some other cabinet styles, but the price actually is determined more by the wood used to make the cabinets than the white paint or vinyl coating. For example, at one home improvement store a 36″ sink base cabinet will cost $116 in oak, $125 in white, and $154 in maple. There are, however, great variations in the cost and the quality.
The paint or coating can hide the wood used to build the cabinets. For example, the cabinet might be built of particle board, pine, oak, hickory, maple, or most any other kind of wood. It could even be built of plywood. This is an important factor in determining the quality of workmanship in the cabinets.
Choosing white cabinets can be a way to save money by opting for a lower quality material with a good exterior finish. But remember that kitchens get hot and steamy. Be sure you choose a material that will not warp or peel.
White kitchen cabinets are made in a full range of styles, making them ideal in any kitchen design. But it is important to match the style of the cabinet doors and the construction style with the style of your kitchen. Here are some tips to help you choose.
- Traditional kitchens frequently use white. Cabinets in a traditional kitchen usually have a raised-panel door design of some kind. The style is elegant and slightly formal. You will want to keep this in mind as you choose the door style. Southern style traditional kitchens frequently include glass-paned doors, as well.
- White is also very popular in country kitchens. White is most popular in an English country style or a Victorian bungalow or a cottage, but it is also very commonly seen in American farmhouses. Country kitchen cabinets look well used, so white kitchen cabinets can be freely mixed with other finishes as well. Cabinets for country kitchens also typically have raised panel designs.
- White can also be used in an eclectic style kitchen. With this style, anything goes and woods, finishes and decorative features are commonly well mixed.
- Contemporary style kitchens, whether futuristic or retro, also commonly use white. In a contemporary kitchen cabinet doors will have flat, smooth surfaces to produce a sleek appearance. Glass, particularly frosted or textured glass, door panels are also often used.
White kitchen cabinets can be ideal in any kitchen. By choosing the right door style and the right hardware, white cabinets can be used for any kitchen renovation or remodel.

Can You Name The Top 4 Kitchen Cabinet Design Elements?
Kitchen cabinet design offers many options ensuring that every one doing a renovation can find the perfect cabinets for their kitchen. Understanding the basic components of design will help you narrow the variety of options and simplify the decision. Some of these components are construction quality issues and others are related to kitchen style and personal taste.
The first two components we will consider are construction quality matters. The other two relate to kitchen style, dcor and individual preferences.
1. The materials used to build your cabinets. Material will determine much about the appearance of your cabinets. Because of the great range in design, you have several choices:
- Metal can be both expensive and heavy. Some metals - especially the ones used in our parents’ or grandparents’ kitchens - were subject to rust. Metal can leak chemicals into food stored in the cabinets and make the food unhealthy. Metal cabinets also show dents and scratches. Metal can have color baked on or it can be painted. It is not a popular choice today in kitchen cabinet design. If metal cabinets are used, they are most suited to a contemporary style kitchen.
- Wood combinations. Some cabinet makers use less expensive wood, such as plywood or pine, to build the cabinet case and then use doors and exterior panels of better or more expensive wood. Some also use particle board or other composite materials. Any wood cabinets can be painted in the color of your choice. You can use a glossy finish or a matte finish for your perfect cabinet.
- Solid wood cabinets are built completely of finished, high-quality wood, such as hickory, oak, maple or more expensive woods like walnut or mahogany. Traditional and country style kitchens might use a dark wood, such as cherry, mahogany, walnut or ebony. Contemporary kitchens tend to use lighter color woods such as birch, alder or maple. You will want to consider the color, the grain of the wood and the finish applied to the wood. Good cabinets are finished with several coats of polyurethane to protect the wood. Wood is the most popular material used.
2. Low quality cabinets are often put together with glue or with nails or staples. This is not a good idea (if you have the choice) because under the heavy use of kitchen cabinets and drawers, they will not last. High quality cabinets will be joined with dove tail construction. This is the most important construction component.
3. Door Style. There are many types and designs in cabinet doors. The door style is the primary determiner. For example, a contemporary kitchen would almost demand a flat panel door design. Raised panel design, on the other hand, is the preferred door style for a traditional style kitchen. Other designs include these door styles: reveal-overlay panel, frame and panel, beaded frame and panel, square raised panel, curved raised panel, bead board panel and cathedral panel.
4. Accessories include knobs and handles, organization gadgets, accessibility options and specialty adaptations. Knobs and handles should match both the style of the kitchen and the other metals visible in the kitchen. Many gadgets and dividers can be installed in drawers and cabinets to organize the contents. Accessibility items include sliding trays, top mounted racks or spinning units to make it easier to reach things in the cabinets. Specialty adaptations are changes made to make cabinets fit over refrigerated drawers or bar refrigerators, and other specialty items.
Understanding these basics of kitchen cabinet design you will be better informed, ask better questions, and limit the number of cabinet styles you consider in order to a choose cabinets for your kitchen renovation.

Why Oak Kitchen Cabinets Are Worth the Cost
One of the most important decisions made when remodeling a kitchen is the material and style of the kitchen cabinets. Most remodeling is done on a budget. Oak kitchen cabinets are more expensive than some other options. It is natural to be concerned if oak is worth the additional cost. Oak is prized for its durability and beauty. Especially in North America and England it is natural to consider oak kitchen cabinets.
Oak kitchen cabinets are desirable for several reasons:
- Oak is very hard. English oak has a harder surface than many other varieties, making it especially popular for furniture.
- Oak is admired for its unique open grain.
- Oak is admired for strength and durability.
- Oak is heavy.
- Oak is strong and should last for generations.
- Oak is associated with dignity.
- Oak is very desirable for furniture and for this reason oak kitchen cabinets are prized.
Varieties of Oak
There are an estimated 295 kinds of oak in the world. About 50 of them grow in North America. Most oak is divided into one of two families: white oak and red oak. White oak is less porous and more durable. Its color is widely preferred for furniture and kitchen cabinets. White oak has a finer texture and a more prominent figure. It is more resistant to moisture and fungus. This is a major reason oak kitchen cabinets are so popular. Red oak tends to have a reddish cast and a coarser texture.
Two Ways to Cut Oak
When building oak kitchen cabinets or furniture, the wood can be cut straight or it can be quarter-sawed. The difference will be very apparent. Oak has strips of a special tissue that radiates from the center of the tree or log out to the edge (called medullary rays). These strips look like the spokes of a wheel. When the log is cut through by quarter sawing, the boards will show flakes of smooth wood. The effect can be stunning. Quarter sawing does not produce the same effect in narrow strips, but it can be remarkable in cabinet doors. This added feature makes oak kitchen cabinets a more desirable choice if you want a unique room.
Oak cabinets can create a truly beautiful and luxurious room. When matched with oak window and door frames, chair rail, and other trim, as well as oak kitchen stools, table and chairs, etc. the total effect can be breathtaking. Mixing the right varieties of oak can eliminate sameness and produce a result that is totally unique. This makes oak kitchen cabinets an outstanding choice for your kitchen remodel.

The Eight Primary Designs For Kitchen Cabinet Doors
Kitchen cabinet doors are the most obvious part of cabinets. In fact, your kitchen cabinet doors will define the style and design of your remodeled kitchen. The cabinet door style will be duplicated in the drawer front design too. It is also possible to enhance and change some of these styles to make your kitchen design more unique.
The eight primary styles of kitchen cabinet doors are:
- Reveal-overlay panel - Created by adding an overlay on the front of the door to create the appearance of a recessed panel while retaining the strength of a flat panel door.
- Flat panel - A flat, plain door for contemporary kitchens.
- Frame and panel - Places a frame around a plain center panel.
- Beaded frame and panel - The overlay panel has a beaded edge.
- Square raised panel - The center panel is raised slightly more than the edges of the door.
- Bead board panel - The panel uses a vertically grooved center panel for a more distinctive appearance.
- Curved raised panel - A raised panel door, with top of the panel slightly arched or curved.
- Cathedral panel - Another variation on the raised panel door, with a panel that has at the top the distinctive curves of a cathedral window.
Most kitchen cabinet doors can be further personalized by adding additional layers of framing or overlay, except the flat panel and the beadboard panel styles. The panels can also be carved with various designs. All of these styles of kitchen cabinet doors can be used in natural or stained wood or can be painted.
Your kitchen cabinet doors can also be treated in other ways to make them unique. For example, door panels can be replaced with glass, or some of the kitchen cabinet doors can be excluded completely for open shelving. Several types of glass can be used to make the items in the cabinets less apparent while maintaining the feel of openness. For example, colored or stained glass can be used very effectively in cathedral panel styles. Even leaded or etched glass can be used in this uniquely shaped opening. Etching the glass opens hundreds of possibilities for a unique kitchen design that highlights a special family interest (vegetables, animals, flowers).
Other glass options include frosted glass, textured glass or barnstead glass. The latter is a clear liner-ribbed patterned glass with embedded wire to make the glass somewhat opaque. Colored glass can be very effective in a few of the cabinet doors (for variation). Yet another possibility for a truly distinctive look in kitchen cabinet doors would use layered glass. This glass is produced by combining tempered glass with another material. Often these materials are very exotic, such as rice paper or a metallic film. The special material is placed between glass layers to create a very unique effect.
The most common styles of kitchen cabinet doors are flat panel for more contemporary kitchens and raised panel doors for other styles. Overlays and beadboard panel doors are less common. Consider all available options before making a selection for your kitchen cabinet doors. With a little imagination and a good cabinetmaker, you can create a completely unique kitchen design.

Not Just for the Kitchen - Cabinetry for All over the Home
Mention new cabinets and most people will immediately think of the kitchen. And while its true a good set of cabinets is essential for any kitchen to function properly they can be put to great use in other rooms in the home as well.
Cabinets in the Bathroom
Bathroom cabinets are not the must have that kitchen cabinets are but they do make a big difference to the way a bathroom looks and functions which can have a positive impact on the day to day lives of the whole household.
A good bathroom cabinet system means that all those towels can be folded away out of sight (except for maybe a nice decorative hand towel or two) and everyone’s essential stuff (shampoos, conditioners, body washes etc) can be stored away neatly when not in use, rather than left strewn all over the place.
Bathroom cabinetry comes in many different sizes, styles and colors and are more than affordable. If your bathroom is in need of a little more organization (as well as a bit of a face lift) a good set of bathroom cabinets might just be all you need.
Living Room
The average family room these days contains a lot of “stuff”. Big screen TVs and home entertainment systems are great but the amount of wiring they leave trailing behind them is unsightly to say the least.
Add to that all those games, and the game systems to play them on, plus all the controllers, wires and attachments. Lets also not forget those CDs and DVDs. The average entertainment center really feels the strain and it is almost impossible to keep it all organized.
For many homeowners the perfect way to deal with this modern media overload is replace their overburdened CD racks and flimsy book shelves with an integrated cabinetry system that can store everything away and will complement the overall look and feel of the room. Most people wonder, after having such cabinets installed, how they ever lived without them.
The Home Office - Working at home can be a great alternative to life in the 9 to 5 world but only if you can remain focused and organized. And it is hard to do that when you are surrounded by a pile of papers and have no real place to put them all.
A good set of cabinets can make all the difference in this situation. Getting organized is just the start. After home office cabinets have been installed the space looks and fells far more like a real office rather than just the converted corner of the dining room or re purposed spared bedroom it really is.
For the Rest of the House
In fact whether it is the mudroom, the hallway or the laundry room the fact is that any space in your home that would benefit from the addition of a little storage space is a great place to consider adding some brand new cabinets

Choosing The Right Kind Of Wood For Your Cabinets
Oak is the most popular choice for cabinets. Why? Oak is found all over the world so it is easily accessible. Also, oak is easy to stain. Oak cabinets can be stained to look like other forms of wood. The most popular stain for oak cabinets is the natural honey stain. However, darker stains are common too. Oak is also very durable. Oak cabinets are used frequently because they last the longest. Lastly, oak cabinets are aesthetically pleasing. Oak cabinets are popular because they are nice to look at.
Maple is similar to oak in numerous ways. Maple wood is extremely versatile as well. Once maple has been stained, it will still retain its original wood grain. It also holds other stain colors well. Maple is a cost effective alternative to cabinetry as well. Maple trees are found in Asia so affordable cabinets are often times manufactured there.
Pine cabinets are also popular. Although, pine cabinets tend to be more expensive than oak or maple cabinets. Yellow, white and ponderosa pine are the most common forms to be used in cabinets. White and yellow pine are the most versatile forms of pine wood. Ponderosa pine requires more work in terms of staining it.
Cherry wooden is not as generally used for cabinets. The biggest reason for this is the price. Cherry wooden is extremely expensive. Although, cabinets made from cherry wooden are breathtaking. Cherry wood cabinets tend to be darker and more elegant than other forms of wood.
Choosing the right type of wooden for your cabinets is extremely important. First, you must know your budget. Don’t choose cherry wooden cabinets if you can’t afford it. You must also choose a kind of wood that you like. Don’t put maple cabinets in your home if you don’t like the look of maple wood. Choose the right kind of wooden for your cabinets so your remodel is a success.

Thinking space, function, style, when beginning a small kitchen remodel, are essential points for success. The size of a room may seem rather limiting when making selections comparable to those for large kitchens; though a little creative thinking can bring pleasing results.
Personal style plays a big role as well, though a common goal to achieve is to create the appearance of a larger room and to incorporate function. There are a few key points to consider while creating a plan that can help achieve greater results.
Cabinets - Choosing a lighter tone wood finish or paint will help to create the illusion of a larger space. Since there will inevitably be a lesser amount of room for cabinetry, adding Lazy Susan style, along with space saving slider shelving allows for maximum storage space.
Appliances - This is a key important decision for two reasons: they will be the more expensive of purchases made for a renovation and will have a large impact on how cluttered or open the space. As a rule of thumb, lighter colors make an area look bigger. Measuring existing units to assess a range of size is very important. Choosing conservative sizes that will also compliment the functionality of the area, along with lighter colors can quickly transform the smaller dimensions to appear bigger.
Walls and Floors - Deciding on color variations, it is often appealing to have a variation of tones present in a room for contrast. Staying with neutral tones will not only create great accent for the lighter appliances, it adds to a brighter room, as well as providing a larger appearance. When choosing tiles, larger sized tiles are best to open up a room, versus small blocks and clusters.
A small kitchen remodel can seem like a limited undertaking with many space restrictions; yet it has many benefits. First, it is much less of a financial burden due to fewer materials needed. Many of the projects can be achieved DIY since the space is smaller. There are innovative choices available nowadays for appealing designs that offer extensive function with an alluring touch.

The Benefits Of Corner Cabinets
Bare corners can be a significant eyesore in a room. Unfortunately, it can be very difficult to decide what to stick in these corners. Some folks choose a chair, while other people go for a tall potted plant, or perhaps a floor lamp.
Whereas many corner style cabinets are typically utilized in kitchens and dining rooms, corner style cabinets can be used nearly anywhere within the house. Many entertainment cabinets are corner style cabinets.
It isn’t uncommon for the modern household to have more than one television. The first household television is often the center of the room. This type of tv is usually displayed on the wall or in a giant entertainment system style cabinet. A corner style cabinet will not work well as a primary display.
However, secondary household televisions do not always assume a distinguished role in a room. Of course, many individuals want their secondary televisions out of the way. They need them to mix in with the space and not take up too much space. A corner cabinet ensures that the tv is definitely accessible when required but out of the way when turned off.
Most of those corner cabinets are tall, vertically oriented structures with swinging cabinet doors. A number of these cabinets have drawers, but they are less common. The sort of wood a shopper chooses is important and should always go well with the remainder of the room.
Be sure to consider the other furniture in the space before buying a cabinet.
It is always vital to choose a cabinet that fits with the existing style and decor of a room. Take complete measurements to make sure a correct fit and strive to match the cabinet color, stain, and style with existing furniture.
Keep in mind, symmetry and balance is just as necessary to a space as efficiency and function. You will find many sources of discount cabinetry online by simply doing a search.
