How To Easily Repair Garbage Disposal Problems At Home
Many people repair garbage disposal issues themselves today instead of calling a plumber. They arm themselves with a little bit of knowledge about their machine, like what all the pieces are to begin with. Then they make sure they the right tools for any situation.
Before working on a problem with your machine, you must turn off the power for safety reasons. Once that is done, gather up a few tools that you may need like, a turning tool, a bucket, some metal tongs, a pipe wrench, a screwdriver, and a snake or auger. A broomstick can be used in the place of a turning tool. Just remember that when working on one, keep your hands out of it.
Sometimes, things get stuck and need to be removed. First, use a flashlight to look inside the drain. If you see something, use metal tongs to remove it. If that is not the problem then you need to locate the hole at the bottom of the machine and insert your turning tool or broom handle into it. Move the disposal back and forth to loosen the object and then try it to see if it works.
A slow drain may be a sign of a clog. Do not use a chemical drain cleaner to unclog the mess as that may cause damage. Place a bucket under the drain and then loosen the trap. Locate the clog and remove it. If you cannot find a clog, it may be in the drainpipe and a snake or auger is necessary to remove it.
There are usually three places to check when leaks occur. Check the screws on the drainage pipe first as they may need tightened. If that isn’t the problem, check the bolts where the machine is mounted to ensure they are tight. Sometimes you need to add or replace the plumber’s putt where the disposal and sink meet.
Usually if you discover your machine is not working at all, it is because it was overloaded and needs reset. The reset button is usually located underneath the disposal, and all you need to do is locate it and press it. This usually solves the problem, but if it doesn’t there may be faulty wiring or a cord needs replaced.
It isn’t uncommon to repair garbage disposal problems such as clogs, jams, and leaks. It is important that when you do this yourself to take precautions and to be sure of what you are doing. If anything is beyond your expertise, there is no shame in calling an expert in.
