The Different Versions of Waffles
Waffles are a favorite meal for adults and children alike. While everyone knows what the standard version of a waffle looks and tastes like, many people don't know that waffles can come in many different international variations that differ in taste, appearance and texture.
Essentially, a waffle is a cake made from a batter and that is cooked in a waffle maker. A waffle that is properly made and cooked will be crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The basic ingredients of the batter itself has flour, water, eggs and baking powder. However, the exact ingredients will vary according to what type of waffle you are making.
The very first reference to waffles can be found in a recipe book hundreds of years old. Medieval cities use to have vendors selling waffles in the street. This cake was made from a basic recipe and then cooked in between two hot plates made from iron and placed on a very hot fire.
Americans were first introduced to this type of cake when pilgrims from Holland brought their recipe with them in 1620. Like most things, the Americans changed to recipe to match their sweet tooth and inow in modern times you can find them virtually all across the country.
The middle ages tradition of waffles still exists in Europe today. The most famous of these cakes is called the Belgian waffle. It differs to the American version by being larger, crustier and thicker. It is well known for its large pockets which can hold large amounts of syrup and butter.
Belgium and America are not the only countries which have their local version of these cakes. In Asia, Hong Kong waffles are a popular snack that is sold on the streets and eaten hot. These were brought to the country by the English occupiers and adapted by the locals. They look very much like a grid cake. Stroopwafels are a centuries old cake which is sold in the Netherlands. This version has two pieces that are stuck together by the sweet filling inside.
Making a waffle is easier than you think. You first need to find the right recipe and you can search for these on the internet or in a good cook book that you can buy from your local book store. One of the great things about this meal is that you can be creative by adding and changing things to see what works best.
Besides the actual recipe, you will need an waffle maker. They aren't expensive and there are many different types around. There is even one that makes waffles in the shape of a cartoon character. When buying a maker ensure that you have researched the brand thoroughly and that you are confident in their quality.
